Project 365: A week at home

Since N and I both have a little bit of time off between semesters at the moment, we decided we would head home to Norfolk to get some country air, visit our families and enjoy those little home comforts you miss when you're at uni (hello, bath tub).

We drove up on Tuesday after N's exam and arrived quite late in the evening, so on Wednesday morning we indulged in a lie-in and fancy breakfasts (a cooked breakfast for N, and porridge with all of the toppings for me). I had some work I wanted to get started on so was on my laptop by late morning, while N enjoyed a very well deserved post-exam day off.

Our days at home have been quiet, spending much of our time on the sofa working on various things with a film on in the background (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone had me feeling all kinds of nostalgia). The night before I made my way home to see my mum, we cosied up in the front room with cushions and blankets, lit the fire and played a couple of rounds of Yahtzee, which if you ask me is the definition of the perfect evening in.

As I made my way home on my old bus and my old walk to the house I felt such a wonderful familiarity, which got me thinking about all the memories I have of growing up in Norfolk. Norfolk has been my home for the past twelve years or so, and it's somewhere I have a lot of fondness for. I think I needed to get a bit older and maybe even spend some time away from it to really appreciate it, and although it may not be big and bustling,  I have such a big space in my heart for Norfolk now, with its beautiful coastlines, tiny towns and slightly sleepy pace of life. It's been really lovely spending some time back here this week, and as we've still got a few more days before we head back to Brighton I'm going to be making the most of it.

I can't believe we're a month into the year already! While January has been relatively quiet, February is set to be a very busy and exciting month, and I'm very much looking forward to sharing it all with you.

I hope this month has been kind to you and that 2016 has started well for you, and that February is even better.

Breakfast at Six

As I mentioned in the last Project 365 update, one of my old friends from sixth form, Albertine, came down to Brighton with her boyfriend for a little weekend getaway. I'd been racking my brains for somewhere we could go for brunch on the Sunday, so when I saw 42 Juice had teamed up with Six in Hove to offer hot drinks and nourishing breakfasts, I very excitedly tagged Albertine and asked if she wanted to go. As a fellow lover of breakfast and all things healthy she of course agreed, and on Sunday morning we wandered over with hungry bellies and breakfast on our minds.

Six is a both a restaurant and a bar, with lots of seating and gorgeous interiors; I'm talking floor to ceiling windows, marble tables, a mix of exposed brick and beautifully wallpapered walls, and ivy flowing from every banister. All of the food on the menu is locally sourced, organic and seasonal, and much of the food 42 Juice offer is raw, too, so there are plenty of lovely options (both raw and non-raw!). 42 Juice also have their own little area within Six, with freshly made smoothies at the counter, a fridge full of bottled juices and nut mylks, superfoods like chia and hemp seeds and a selection of tasty raw snacks and chocolate.

It was a little bit of a walk to get there, so by the time we arrived we were suitably chilly enough to want to warm up with some coffee and warm food. I opted for 42's warm buckwheat porridge, something I often make at home but always cold as I use frozen bananas to give it a creamy texture, topped with mixed nuts, sliced banana and lashings of maple syrup. I also ordered a soy latte on the side. Albertine went for the vegetarian breakfast and a matcha latte, and I have to admit I was slightly jealous of her generous portion of mashed avocado. Albertine's boyfriend, who was also with us, ordered the regular English breakfast and a flat white.

My porridge was absolutely delicious and kept me full well into the afternoon, and Albertine and her boyfriend both spoke highly of their meals, too. The coffee was also delicious, which is always a sign of a great venue in my book! I'm actually already planning another visit soon with N, so if you're ever in or around Brighton and Hove I would suggest making a visit yourself if you fancy stopping for delicious and oh-so-good-for-you food in a gorgeous, but still casual, setting.

Although, if you do have any recommendations yourself, please do let me know! I'm always on the hunt for new brunch and coffee stops.

Project 365: Getting into the swing of things

The second and third weeks of January completely flew by, although looking back it doesn't feel like all that much happened. N and I were still snowed under with work, so were still spending most of our time with our heads buried in either a laptop or a textbook (or a cup of tea).

We did however pop out a couple of times to run some errands and grab a coffee or two. The temperature has certainly dropped these past few weeks and we've had a lot of those beautiful sunny but ice-cold days, so it was really refreshing to get outside nice and early in the day to stretch our legs and get some fresh air to break up our studying.

We stayed up rather late last Friday finishing Lord of the Rings (which I'll admit I didn't think I would really 'get', but ended up loving!), so the next morning I enjoyed a little bit of a lie-in and breakfast in bed.

I also spent quite a bit of my free time flicking through my cook books and picking out some potential meal ideas in order to keep up my goal to cook more this year. I actually ended up making the pesto-crumbed fish dish you can see here from Jamie Oliver's 'Everyday Super Food' (although I swapped the fish for a portobello mushroom), and I'm pleased to say it turned out really well! Other than that things were quite quiet until the weekend, when my friend came down from London for a little sea side air.

On Saturday night we stayed in, made a sneaky little Pizza Face order, cosied up in the spare room and chatted the evening away. Around mid-morning on Sunday we walked over to Hove to visit Six, a gorgeous bar/restaurant with big airy windows, marble tables, beautiful patterned wallpaper and an abundance of ivy and hanging plants (and I can't not mention the copper taps in the bathrooms). They have also recently partnered with my favourite juice place to offer juices, all manner of healthy hot drinks and some wonderful raw and organic food alongside Six's own organic, locally-sourced seasonal menu. I opted for warm buckwheat porridge topped with banana, mixed nuts and maple syrup (a favourite combination of mine), and a soy latte on the side, which was the perfect fuel for an afternoon of strolling along the beach, taking a little detour onto the pier, and wandering through the lanes ducking in and out of shops. And don't worry, I'll be uploading a post about Six soon!

My assignments for this semester are all submitted now, so before semester two starts next month I'll have a lot more time to spend on personal projects. I'm still finding my feet with this particular project and it's taking a little while to properly build up confidence with my camera again, but I've been scouting around for inspiration and I think I have a clearer idea of the sort of photos I want to take, so I'm very much looking forward to diving in and really getting into the swing of things while I have this free time.

I hope you're having a wonderful week so far, and I'll be back soon with another post.

Goals for 2016

We may be two weeks into 2016, but I'm still feeling the air of new beginnings and fresh starts that comes with the new year. While I don't tend to make new year's resolutions as such, as I don't believe you have to wait until then to start making positive changes, I do think it's the perfect time to refresh, reflect upon the past year and set your goals and intentions for the next. This year my goals are fairly simple, but I think that's all they really need to be.

#1 Don't go more than three days without exercise
One of my first goals for 2016 is to exercise more as I definitely became quite lazy towards the end of 2015. I wasn't sure what kind of routine I wanted to create, but a few weeks ago I read this rule on Instagram and it's been stuck in my mind ever since. I've tried more set and structured routines in the past but often find it just isn't practical, so a simple, more flexible routine is one I'm much more likely to stick to.

#2 Go on more day trips
I mentioned this in my last post, but felt it needed a mention here, too. Where N and I live we're mostly surrounded by city, but there are lots of beautiful parks and beaches well within driving distance. However, we really don't go out and explore half as much as we should, so one of my goals for this year is for us to go on more day trips. I think getting out and exploring the area around us will not only be a refreshing change from our usual day-off routine of watching films in bed, but it will also make us appreciate where we live more, and it will be a nice little break from city life, too.

#3 Always try to be positive
This probably features in everyone's resolutions every year, but I really do think it's an important one. A positive frame of mind can do wonders for your happiness and overall outlook, which in turn brings more positivity your way. This can manifest itself in your relationships, your work, even the opportunities that come your way, and as I want 2016 to be my best year yet, I want to encourage all the positivity I can.

#4 Continue exploring my creativity
As I also mentioned in my last post, towards the end of last year I started to get back in touch with my creativity, and it's been so nice actively dedicating time to it. This is something I really want to take forward and keep working on, and I'm very much looking forward to sharing my work on here with you through this blog. A lot of it will be personal projects I'm working on, but I'm also really looking forward to getting back into photography again through my Project 365, which you can keep up with here.

#5 Get back into cooking
When I was younger I was quite the avid cook, and it's something I would really love to get back into. I have some really lovely cook books sitting on my shelves that I really don't make enough use of, so I'm excited to get stuck into them and make some tasty, healthy dinners for N and I.

And that's it; just five simple, (hopefully) achievable goals for the next year. After two weeks I think I'm doing pretty well, and I'm really hoping to keep them all up.

Have you made any resolutions or set yourself any goals for 2016? If so, I would love to hear them.

Project 365: Seeing in the new year

After a bit of a lie-in and a morning of work, in the late afternoon on New Year's Day N and I wrapped up in our coats and scarves, I grabbed my camera, and we went for a walk in the countryside. I love the tradition of going for a walk on New Year's Day, and I think there's no better way to breathe in the new year and reflect upon your goals and intentions. It's also a really nice way to refresh after the inevitable late night the night before.

Living in Brighton means most of the time we're surrounded by the city (unless we go down to the beach, of course!), so it was lovely to go and spend some time somewhere much more open and green. That being said, we really don't take advantage of the parks and countryside near Brighton enough, so one of my resolutions for this year is for us to take more day trips and make the most of what's around us.

I'll admit I haven't started Project 365 as well as I would have hoped, but pretty much every day of 2016 so far has been spent at my desk working on uni assignments (or browsing Pinterest, but we won't mention that), so I didn't have many pictures I was happy to upload this week. However, I know part of the challenge of the project is to make the photo opportunities for yourself, even if you're not doing anything particularly exciting or worth photographing, so as of this week I'm planning on getting a lot more creative and finding something to capture every day.

The next instalment will be going up next Sunday, but until then keep an eye out for my next post, which will be going up around mid-week.

Until then,

Best moments of 2015

2015 really did fly by, faster than any other year so far I think, and it was actually quite a 'big' year with some big changes. As any year does, it had its ups and downs, but all in all I can happily say 2015 holds a lot of happy memories.

The start of the year was fairly quiet, so one of my first favourite memories is N's belated birthday celebrations in April. This year he celebrated his 20th birthday, and I had a day of celebrations all planned out. We started the day in Blackbird Tea Rooms on Ship Street in Brighton, where we enjoyed a lovely late breakfast. Breakfast is actually half price before 11am, so if you ever pay a visit yourself I'd recommend popping in early to take advantage of the offer!

We spent the rest of the day wondering around Brighton, taking a stroll down by the beach and enjoying the Spring weather, and in the last afternoon we had an early dinner Carluccio's before the part of the day I had been most excited to reveal to N; a wine tasting at Ten Green Bottles. We both enjoy a glass of wine but really don't know that much about the different varieties, so I thought an evening of wine tasting would be the perfect way to learn a little and perhaps find a new favourite. We spent a good couple of hours there, sampling different wines (my favourite was a sparking white, while N's was a deep red), munching on olives and overall feeling very sophisticated. The evening was a real treat for both of us, and it's still one of my favourite memories of the year.

In July I finally got to meet my friend Jess and her lovely friend Catherine. I met Jess through Instagram good three or four years ago, but due to distance and both of us being busy with school or work we'd never had the chance to meet, so naturally I was thrilled when she told me she would be spending a few days in Brighton in the summer! After the initial "You're a real person!" moments, we grabbed some lunch and sat in the Pavilion gardens talking about university, future plans, and just having a general natter. Although this was the first time we'd met face-to-face things felt totally natural, and we chatted the whole afternoon away! It was so lovely to finally meet, and I hope we have plenty of chances to meet again in 2016.

At the start of September I went down to London to see my friend Albertine. We did an awful lot of walking (my list of places to go was rather long) and visited all of the food places, with my personal favourites being Good Life Eatery (on the right) and 26 Grains (a breakfast lover's dream). It was so lovely to catch up on all that had happened in the year since we had last seen each other and have some girl-time watching films and eating homemade falafel in the evenings.

We also whipped up these delicious pancakes following a recipe from A Modern Way To Eat, which was the perfect fuel for a day of shopping and tube-hopping.

A few days later N and I drove down to Wiltshire to visit my Dad, and we spent the days visiting nearby towns and exploring their cobbled streets and crooked buildings, fantasising about one day maybe living in one of the many beautiful houses we saw.

September was perhaps the biggest month in 2015, as at the end of the month I packed up a car full of things and flew the nest, moving into a pretty little house in Brighton with N and two of his friends from university. Leaving home has been an amazing experience, and although I like to think I was already quite independent, living away from home has taken that one step further and taught me how to deal with things like rent and bills (although I still find it odd to think that I rent an actual house and pay bills and buy groceries every week!).

Moving in with N was also a big step in itself, but it has been a truly wonderful experience and has only made me more excited for the future.

I also started university in September, and it's been really nice to get back into studying again after a year out. I've definitely felt the jump up from A-Levels, but I've been really enjoying the challenge so far.

In early October my friend Kate came to visit, and we both ticked something off our bucket-list by doing the Colour Run! We spent the rest of the days she was here wandering around Brighton and nipping in and out of shops, enjoying coffee and vegan cake at VBites, and talking about our futures. Kate is one of the most intelligent and interesting people I know, and I always come away from our catch-ups feeling really inspired.

In November N and I celebrated our two-year anniversary and spent the day in London, ogling the amazing food at Borough Market, browsing the beautiful stalls at Renegade Craft Fair, and walking many many steps around the British Museum. We then booked ourselves a table at Chilli Pickle for the following night, where I ended up having the best curry I've ever eaten (I've yet to recreate it at home, but if I ever master it I'll be sure to share it with you!).

I was feeling particularly festive this year, so the Christmas celebrations started nice and early at the end of November, with Michael Bublé and my Christmas playlist on Spotify serving as the soundtrack to my study sessions. N and I also spent a couple of evenings in early December snuggled up in bed watching Christmas films, drinking mulled wine and munching on mince pies. I spent Christmas day at home with my mum and we made a wonderful veggie roast, followed by Christmas pudding and amaretto coffees, and we even extended Christmas into boxing day to really get the most out of it.

A few days later I popped down to Wiltshere again to spend a few days with my Dad, step-mum and step-sister, which was also really lovely as I don't tend to see them all that often. We spent most of the time at home playing games or watching films, although we did take a trip into Bristol one afternoon to do some sale shopping and go for lunch at Zerodegrees.

I spent New Year's Eve back in Norfolk with N and his family, and I think this was my best New Year's yet; we all got dressed up and sat at the table together for a lovely dinner, then spent the hours from then until midnight playing Cranium (which only gets better the more G&Ts you drink). When it came close to midnight we moved into the front room and watched the countdown on TV, popped a bottle of champagne and wished each other a happy new year, then called our loved ones to do the same. At around 2am N and I were more than ready for bed, so off we went for the last time in 2015.

As well as all of these amazing moments, I've also gotten back in touch with my creativity over the last few months which has been a really refreshing break from my uni work, and it's something I plan to see through into 2016.

And of course, I couldn't not mention this blog! I re-launched my old blog, Namaste, Rowan, earlier in the year, and although things started really well, after a few months I really started to fall out of love with it, and once I started preparing to move to Brighton I found that I had stopped posting altogether. It took me a while to find my feet again, but eventually I developed a clear idea of what I wanted my blog to be, and why I had started to feel so disconnected from NR. And now here we are! Created By Rowan is going to be much more personal and creative, and I plan to document a lot more of my life here, not only because those are the types of posts I enjoy reading, but also because I want to be able to look back in years to come and have all the best moments of each year documented in one place.

I think 2016 is going to be a big year; there are potentially some big changes in store, and I really want to make this my happiest, most positive and most productive year yet.

I'm also in the process of putting together a little list of my goals for this year, so you can expect to see that on here very soon. In the mean time, I hope 2015 was a great year for you, and I wish you a very happy 2016.
